The journey begins in 1690, when William of Orange arrived in Ireland to defeat King James II at the renowned Battle of the Boyne. The tour will then cover the recent troubles, which began in 1969 and concluded with the peace agreement in 1998.
Enjoy a brief walk around the area, where the Black Taxi Cab driver will explain the significance of the loyalist murals in Belfast. There will be opportunities to capture photographs of these murals.
- Peace Wall - The peace walls were constructed to separate the Catholic (Nationalist) and Protestant (Unionist) communities in Belfast. The initial ‘peace lines’ were established following the outbreak of violence in Northern Ireland in 1969.
Originally intended as temporary structures lasting only six months, their effectiveness led to them being built higher, longer, and made permanent. Today, they remain, adorned with art and messages of hope from visitors.
- Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden - The tour includes a visit to the Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden on Bombay Street. This location is significant as it is where some believe the modern troubles began, with Catholics being forced out of their homes. It is also the birthplace of the Provisional IRA. Each section of the garden will be explained in detail, highlighting its purpose.
The next stop is the Sinn Fein press office, home to one of the most iconic murals on Falls Road, the Bobby Sands mural. Here, you will learn about Bobby Sands’ history and the Irish hunger strike at Maze Prison in 1981.
- International Mural Wall Divis Street - The tour concludes at the International Wall, showcasing a diverse array of murals in Belfast. These murals generally focus on themes of ‘highlighting oppression,’ from the race riots in America in 1969 to current events in Palestine.
