As a seasoned traveler and wine enthusiast, I have had the privilege of exploring some of the most renowned vineyards across Europe. Yet, the allure of Umbria, with its promise of undiscovered wines and intimate tasting experiences, beckoned me. My wife and I embarked on a journey to celebrate a milestone birthday, beginning in the artistic embrace of Florence before winding our way through the rolling hills of Montepulciano and Montalcino. Our final destination was the medieval charm of Perugia, a town known for its chocolate and rich history.

In Perugia, we stumbled upon a unique opportunity that promised to bring the essence of Umbria’s vineyards directly to us. The Private Wine Tasting experience offered a chance to savor the region’s wines without the need for extensive travel. Francesca, an expert sommelier, curated a selection of wines tailored to our preferences, ensuring a personalized and memorable tasting.

The tasting was set in the breakfast room of our hotel, a space adorned with artwork and offering a balcony view that captured the essence of Umbria’s landscape. Although Francesca was engaged elsewhere, her colleagues conducted the tasting with grace and expertise. We were presented with five exquisite wines, each a testament to the region’s diverse offerings.

Among the selection was the Sangrantino, a wine steeped in history and complexity. Originally crafted as a dessert wine, its evolution into a full-bodied red was a revelation. The wine’s rich notes of ripe red and blackberry fruit, balanced with earthy undertones, mirrored the depth of a fine Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. As the tasting drew to a close, a delightful surprise awaited. In honor of my milestone birthday, Francesca’s team presented a 375ml bottle of Sangrantino dessert wine, complete with a live sparkler. It was a moment of joy and celebration, a fitting end to an extraordinary experience.

The opportunity to purchase wines directly from the tasting added to the allure. While the Sangrantino was not available, I acquired a 2022 Rosso Vulcano and a 2024 Macinaia, both exceptional in their own right. The convenience of purchasing these wines, coupled with the personal touch of the tasting, made for an unforgettable experience.
