Mongolia offers one of the world’s most distinctive experiences: Mongolian shamanism. This comprehensive belief system encompasses medicine, religion, nature worship, and ancestor veneration. In the 13th century, a prominent shaman proclaimed Genghis Khan as the representative of Mongke Koko Tengri, the “Eternal Blue Sky.” This divine recognition affirmed his destiny to conquer the world. The Mongol Empire practiced religious tolerance, yet opposing the Great Khan was akin to defying divine will. Central to this system were male and female intermediaries, Shamans (böö) and Shamanesses (udgan), who bridged the human and spirit worlds. However, communication with the spirit world was not exclusive to them; nobles, clan leaders, and even commoners engaged in spiritual practices. The hierarchical structure of Mongolian clan society was mirrored in their worship practices.
