Terelj was initially developed for tourism in 1964, and three decades later, it became part of the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. To the northeast, the park merges with the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, which spans over 1.2 million hectares across the Tov, Selenge, and Khentii aimags. The Khan Khentii park is largely uninhabited by humans, yet it provides a sanctuary for endangered species such as moose, brown bears, and weasels, among others, and is home to over 250 bird species.
