- Genghis Khan Statue Complex - This impressive steel equestrian statue, featuring Genghis Khan, is the largest of its kind globally. Standing 40 meters tall, it is situated on a hillside by the Tuul River in Tsonjin Boldog, connected to Ulaanbaatar by a 54 km paved road. Tsonjin Boldog was selected based on a legend that Genghis Khan discovered a whip here, which in Mongolian culture symbolizes fortune, good destiny, and opportunity. The statue faces east, towards Genghis Khan’s birthplace and the sunrise. Looking east, one can spot a smaller statue of his mother welcoming him.
- Gorkhi-Terelj National Park - Gorkhi Terelj National Park offers a hike to the Turtle Rock.
- Gorkhi Terelj National Park - Turtle Rock, known as “Melkhii Khad,” is a remarkable granite formation, 24 meters (79 feet) high, resembling a turtle. Previously called Mungut Khad, it is located at the base of a pine-covered mountain and is a must-see photo spot on the way to Terelj. Visitors can rent horses, and during summer, souvenir vendors are present. It’s an excellent starting point for a short walk (about one hour) leading to the Aryaval meditation center or the park’s more secluded areas. A few kilometers further on the main road to Terelj Village, you can see “the old man reading” formation on your right.
- Ariyabal Meditation Temple - Situated within Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, about 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) from the entrance, a pleasant 45-minute hike from Turtle Rock leads to the Aryaval meditation center. Nestled on a larch and granite rock-covered mountain slope, it offers a delightful experience for travelers. To reach the temple, cross a small wooden bridge marked “the bridge that leads beyond wisdom.” The main temple is dedicated to the Kalachakra philosophy, “wheel of time,” and houses a thangka depicting the Shambhala myth (a thangka is a painting on cotton or silk; Shambhala is a mythical place in Buddhist philosophy), a Kalachakra mandala, and other related items. On the ground floor, visitors can explore a “gallery of Buddhist philosophy,” featuring 220 original paintings by artist Bayantsagaan, showcasing various beliefs and Buddhist philosophies.
