Hustai National Park - Also known as Khustain Nuruu National Park, meaning “the range of silver birches,” is situated 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of the capital, at an elevation of 1843 meters (1.1 miles) above sea level in the Altanbulag sum. It is bordered by Avdar Mountain on its western side.
Established as a natural reserve in 1992, it initially spanned 506 square kilometers (195 square miles). In 1998, it was designated a national park, covering 500 square kilometers (193 square miles), with the goal of reintroducing the Przewalski’s horse, “takhi,” and preserving the forest steppe ecosystem, which is severely threatened by land overuse. The park is home to 459 plant species, 85 lichen species, 90 moss species, 33 mushroom species, and 44 mammal species, including the red deer, Mongolian gazelle, roe deer, gray wolf, lynx, and red fox.
Kharkhorin
Kharakhorum Museum - The ancient capital of Mongolia, Kharakhorum, the legendary city of Chinggis Khaan, was established in 1220 in the Orkhon valley, at the intersection of the Silk Road. It served as the administrative center of the Mongol Empire until Khubilai Khaan relocated it to Beijing. The symbolic ruins of Kharakhorum (Kharkhorin), with monumental walls stretching 400 meters and featuring 108 stupas, encircle Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery, Erdene Zuu Monastery, constructed in 1586. In 1792, it housed 62 temples and 10,000 lamas; since 1990, it has been an active monastery once more. Stone-carved turtles marked the boundaries of the complex. Nearby, Turkish monuments and rock inscriptions from the 8th-9th centuries commemorate notable independence fighters.
Erdene Zuu Monastery - Erdene Zuu (Hundred Treasures) was Mongolia’s first Buddhist monastery. Initiated in 1586 by Abtai Khaan, it wasn’t fully completed until approximately 300 years later. The monastery featured between 60 and 100 temples, with about 300 gers set up within its walls, and at its peak, housed up to 1000 monks.
Like Karakorum, the monastery was abandoned and later vandalized by invading Manchus. Restoration efforts were made around 1760 and again in 1808 under the guidance of the renowned architect Manzshir, but the Stalinist purges of the 1930s led to the destruction of all but three temples in Erdene Zuu, and an unknown number of monks were either killed or sent to Siberia, never to be heard from again.
Orkhon Valley
Orkhon Waterfall - Orkhon Falls, or “Orkhonii Khürkhree,” features white waves cascading over black stone, transformed into rainbows by the sun’s rays. These enchanting waterfalls stand 16 meters (52.5 feet) high and 5 meters (16 feet) wide.
The Orkhon waterfalls were formed 20,000 years ago due to a unique combination of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. During the heart of summer, their flow is significant, but they can dry up in spring. The Ulaan Tsutgalaan River, “Red Confluence,” creates these falls as it flows into the Orkhon River.

Back to Ulaanbaatar
Hustai National Park - The Khustai tourist resort is located 100 km west of Ulaanbaatar city. The resort is open year-round, accommodating 40 tourists in winter and 95 in summer. Moilt camp is also available in summer, serving 25 visitors per day.
The center showcases photos, scripts, and illustrations on the takhi reintroduction, ecosystems, historical events, and operations of Khustai National Park.
Khustai offers special adventure hiking routes. Visitors can hike and observe rare birds, wild animals, and flowers.
