• Eishin-in Temple - ① Discover the unique ‘matcha incense made from wooden moulds’ and learn the art of burning it (15 minutes) ② Create 6-7 pieces of matcha incense (45 minutes)

The workshop takes place at Eishin-in Temple, just a 5-minute stroll from Uji Bridge, the heart of tourism in Uji, Kyoto.

The sole ingredient is matcha, crafted from fresh Uji matcha that would otherwise go to waste.

This also serves as a wonderful gift for friends and family.

An extra fee of 8,800 yen (per group) will be applied on-site. (Please be aware that if you book within a week, an interpreter might not be available.)

• We produce 6-7 types of incense, uniquely crafted from matcha, the only incense of its kind globally. It releases the delightful aroma of tea without burning, eliminating concerns about ash or smoke-related health issues.

• The matcha tea used is collected from machine gaps and would otherwise be discarded. It is sourced while still fresh, allowing participation in eco-friendly practices while enjoying the process.

• Traditional Japanese sweets wooden molds, custom-made for incense, are used. These molds resemble edible pastries and are exclusive to this incense maker, utilizing around 50 different types of candy wood molds. The incense maintains its beautiful shape even after the fragrance fades and can be reused as an aroma stone.

• A special incense burner, designed to fold into small pieces, is provided. It can be taken home to enjoy the scent immediately, making it a wonderful souvenir.

• The clay incense ingredients are soft and have a calming effect on the mind, perfect for children who enjoy playing with clay.

• The event takes place at Eshin-in Temple, located in the heart of Kyoto Uji tourism. The garden, maintained by the priest, features a variety of seasonal flowers and offers a stunning view of Byodo-in Temple across the Uji River.

Please apply for two or more participants. If you select “English” as your preferred language, an interpreter will be arranged for an additional ¥8,800 at the door.

• The session will be held in a shoe-free room, so infants and small children can relax together.
• You can park one car. If the parking lot is full, please use the nearby paid parking lot.
