From Waves to Wonders: A Surfer’s Journey Through Ubud’s Sacred Forests and Jungle Swings
Trading the surfboard for a day in Ubud, I embarked on an adventure through sacred forests, exhilarating jungle swings, and spiritual temples. Join me as I explore the vibrant culture and lush landscapes of this Balinese village.
A Day in Ubud: Monkeys, Swings, and Sacred Waters
When you’re used to the rhythm of the ocean, the idea of spending a day away from the waves might seem a bit daunting. But every now and then, it’s good to trade the surfboard for a different kind of adventure. That’s exactly what I did when I found myself in Ubud, Bali, ready to explore the lush landscapes and cultural treasures of this vibrant village.
Our guide for the day, Lewer, was a gem. His knowledge of the area was as deep as the ocean, and he navigated the winding roads of Ubud with the same ease I feel when catching a wave. Our first stop was the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a place that felt like stepping into another world. As we walked under the canopy of trees, Lewer shared fascinating stories about the monkeys and the temples that dotted the forest. It was a bit like watching the ocean’s wildlife, but on land. The monkeys were playful and curious, and I couldn’t help but snap a few photos to capture the moment.
Swinging Through the Jungle
After our monkey encounter, we headed to D’Alas Warung Restaurant for lunch. The set menu offered a variety of delicious options, and the food was as satisfying as a post-surf meal. But the real highlight was the jungle swing. Suspended high above the lush greenery, the swing offered a thrilling ride that reminded me of the exhilaration of catching a perfect wave. The view from the swing was breathtaking, and for a moment, I felt like I was flying over the jungle.
The afternoon was filled with more adventures, including a visit to a coffee plantation where we enjoyed a relaxing tasting session. Unlike some places, there was no pressure to buy anything, just a chance to savor the flavors and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It was a nice change of pace from the usual hustle and bustle of travel.
Temples and Terraces
Our final stops were the Tirta Empul Temple and the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. At the temple, Lewer provided insights into Hinduism, and I found myself drawn to the spiritual energy of the place. Watching the locals perform their rituals was a humbling experience, and it reminded me of the deep connection I feel with the ocean.
As we arrived at the rice terraces, the rain began to pour, but it only added to the beauty of the scene. The vibrant green of the terraces against the gray sky was a sight to behold, and I couldn’t resist taking a few more photos. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that while the ocean will always be my first love, there’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Ubud offered a different kind of adventure, one that was rich in culture and natural beauty. If you ever find yourself in Bali, I highly recommend taking a break from the waves to experience the magic of Ubud. It’s a journey you won’t soon forget.
