Windmills Of Lasithi Plateau - Windmills
The windmills are a standout feature of Lasithi. Their design is unique: the base is constructed from stone and resembles the stern of a large ship. The blades, crafted from white canvas, are positioned at the front of the windmill, enhancing their resemblance to a seafaring vessel.
The creation of these mills was driven by the necessity to supply water for irrigating the land where numerous crops were cultivated.
The mills brought water to the surface from a depth of approximately 6 meters. Historically, there were about 40,000 mills on the plateau. Today, only a few remain, although local residents have begun efforts to restore them.

Kera Kardiotissa Monastery - On the way to the plateau, visitors can stop by the Kera Kardiotissa Monastery, a convent established during the medieval era.
It became widely known for the miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Legend has it that the icon always returned to the monastery. Invaders repeatedly attempted to steal it, but it consistently reappeared in the temple.
The original icon is now in Italy, with only a replica remaining in Greece. - Cave of Psychros - On one of Diktiās slopes, visitors can explore the renowned Zeus Cave. According to legend, prophets foretold to Zeusās father that one of his children would dethrone him. In fear, Kronos began consuming them. However, Zeusās mother, in her fear, gave Kronos a stone wrapped in baby clothes and fled to this cave. When Zeus matured, he waged war against his father, fulfilling the prophecy.
The cave is situated at an elevation of 980 meters above sea level. It is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Numerous archaeological discoveries highlight the caveās significance during that era.
- Chalavro - Visitors can unwind and savor local cuisine in a charming tavern near the Zeus Cave.
The welcoming hosts offer a variety of homemade dishes, all prepared with natural ingredients. Alongside traditional Greek fare, they serve exceptional mountain tea. Cretan oregano imparts an incredible aroma and flavor. The tavern owners personally gather and brew it using a special recipe.
- Lasithi Prefecture - Pitarokilis family Ceramic workshop and olive oil factory.
After visiting the cave, guests can explore the ceramics center in the village of Psychro. The products are crafted from blue clay, sourced from the local area.
The artisansā crafts are unique as they adhere to traditional methods. Visitors can engage with the craftsmen, learn the secrets of their craft, and observe the potters at work.
