From Waves to Waterfalls: A Coffee Adventure in Turrialba
Trading the surfboard for a horse, I ventured into the mountains of Turrialba for a coffee adventure at Aquiares Coffee Farm. From picking beans to a refreshing waterfall dip, this experience was a delightful detour from the usual beach life.
A Journey Through the Coffee Mountains
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as my wife and I set off on a new adventure, leaving behind the familiar sound of crashing waves for the lush, green mountains of Turrialba. Our destination was the Aquiares Coffee Farm, a place that promised a unique experience from seed to cup. As we drove through the winding mountain roads, the anticipation of a day filled with rich aromas and vibrant flavors was palpable.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Andrew, our guide for the day. The morning began with a delightful breakfast spread, featuring fresh fruit, breads, and a passionfruit jam that was nothing short of divine. It was the perfect start to what would be an unforgettable day.
Riding Through the Plantation
After breakfast, we were introduced to our gentle companions for the morning—a group of well-mannered horses ready to take us through the sprawling coffee plantation. As someone who spends most of his time on a surfboard, I was a bit apprehensive about riding a horse. However, the experience was surprisingly smooth and enjoyable.
We trotted through rows of coffee plants, the air filled with the earthy scent of the beans. Andrew shared insights into the life of a coffee picker, and we even had the chance to try our hand at picking the ripe, red cherries. It was a humbling experience, realizing the effort that goes into each cup of coffee we often take for granted.
Our ride led us to a breathtaking waterfall, where we took a moment to soak in the natural beauty and cool off in the refreshing waters. It was a serene interlude, a reminder of the simple pleasures that nature offers.
From Bean to Brew
Returning to the Casa, we were treated to a delicious lunch, a feast that celebrated the local flavors and ingredients. With our appetites satisfied, we embarked on the next leg of our journey—the coffee processing tour.
Andrew guided us through the intricate process of turning raw coffee cherries into the aromatic beans we all know and love. From the initial washing and drying to the roasting and bagging, each step was meticulously explained. The highlight was a cupping session, where we sampled different brews, each with its own distinct profile.
For those of us who wanted to take a piece of this experience home, there was an opportunity to purchase green coffee beans in bulk. As a coffee enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the chance to bring back a taste of Costa Rica to share with friends and family.
As the day came to a close, we sipped on one last cup of coffee, reflecting on the knowledge and memories we had gained. The Aquiares Coffee Farm Tour was more than just an excursion; it was a journey into the heart of Costa Rican culture and the art of coffee making. For anyone looking to explore beyond the waves, this is an experience not to be missed.
