- The National Bardo Museum - Located in the former palace of the Bey of Tunis, the Bardo Museum is renowned for its exceptional collection of Roman mosaics sourced from archaeological sites across the country. It is celebrated as one of the world’s finest collections. Just when it seems like the best has been seen, the next room unveils even more astonishing wonders! While the Bardo is primarily focused on mosaics, it also showcases the most significant discoveries from Tunisia’s archaeological sites.
- Site Archeologique de Carthage - Established by the Phoenicians in 814 BC, the earliest settlements of Punic Carthage are still visible on Byrsa Hill, just below the esteemed Carthage National Museum. Although the Romans destroyed it in 146 BC and later rebuilt over it, recent excavations have uncovered the foundations of five-story Punic houses, each equipped with its own cistern and drainage system. The most notable early remains are the two basins of the Punic Ports, showcasing the Carthaginians’ naval prowess, which both fascinated and frustrated the Romans. Another significant site of pre-Roman Carthage is the Tophet, a burial ground and sanctuary dedicated to the Punic deities Tanit and Baal.
- Medina of Tunis - The Old Medina of Tunis is one of the world’s best-preserved Islamic cities. Stroll through its winding streets to admire the architecture of residential quarters and experience the vibrant activity of the souks. Visit the grand Mosque of Djamaa-ez-Zitouna, and explore Souk Echaouchia (the traditional cap makers’ market) and Souk El Attarine (the perfume market).
- Sidi Bou Said - The charming village of Sidi Bou Said is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. This picturesque village is perfect for a leisurely walk through its winding cobbled streets. Its iconic white walls, contrasting sky-blue doors, and intricate window grids create an inspiring setting. Browse the boutiques for souvenirs or unwind at a cliff-side Moorish café.
