- Trsteno Arboretum - Situated in Trsteno, Croatia, Trsteno Arboretum is renowned as the oldest arboretum in this region.[clarification needed][1]
The arboretum was established by the noble Gozze family (refer to House of Gozze) in the late 15th century. They encouraged ship captains to bring back seeds and plants from their voyages. Although the exact founding date is uncertain, the arboretum was already operational by 1492, marked by the construction of a 15-meter aqueduct for irrigation, which remains functional today. Since 1948, it has been owned by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, following a generous donation. The Arboretum holds a distinguished position among the historic Ragusan, Dalmatian, and Mediterranean parks. It features a park surrounding a 15th-century summer residence, a testament to garden architecture, and a 19th-century park at Drvarica.
In 1945, the arboretum became state property under Yugoslavia and was recognized as a natural rarity in 1948. Since 1950, it has been under the management of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1962, the Arboretum Trsteno was officially listed as a protected natural monument, celebrated for its landscape architecture. The protected area spans approximately 255,000 square meters.
Trsteno endured significant damage and looting during the Croatian War of Independence when, on October 2nd and 3rd, 1991, the Yugoslav Peopleâs Army launched gunboat and air attacks, setting the Arboretum ablaze. This resulted in the destruction of a large portion of it and partial damage to the summer residence and the oldest section of the arboretum. Further severe damage occurred in 2000 due to a forest fire during a drought, which destroyed around 120,000 square meters.
Remarkably, the pride of the arboretum, two Oriental Planes located in the central market place of Trsteno, survived both calamities unscathed. These trees are over 500 years old and are unique specimens in Europe. The ancient trees stand approximately 45/60 meters tall, with trunks measuring 5 meters in diameter. Within the former noble familyâs country house lies Croatiaâs oldest Renaissance park, designed in 1502, featuring numerous exotic plants.
