- Devrent Valley - Approximately 50 million years ago, the Cappadocia region was an inland sea. This sea evaporated due to the high temperatures as nearby volcanoes became active. Lava from these volcanoes filled the sea’s basin, much like filling a large bowl. Over millions of years, streams eroded the soft rock formed by the cooling lava, creating deep valleys. Strong winds sculpted the fairy chimneys into their current forms. Each valley in the region has a unique rock structure and wind exposure, resulting in varied fairy chimney formations. Devrent Valley is particularly special for its diverse fairy chimney shapes, earning it the nickname Imaginary Valley, as the formations resemble various living creatures.
- Avanos - The tradition of pottery making in this district, home to numerous pottery workshops, has continued since the Hittite era. Ceramic clay, sourced from the red soil and silt brought by the Kızılırmak River, is crafted by the skilled hands of Avanos ceramic artists.
- Love Valley - The history of Love Valley dates back to at least Roman times. Legend has it that two dynasties once lived in the same village. A conflict arose between them, virtually dividing the village. One day, two villagers complained about the situation, leading to two men from opposing sides being drafted into the army. These soldiers fell in love at first sight. Despite the villagers’ efforts to separate them, they failed. Eventually, the villagers decided to marry the couple. Time passed, and they had a child, but this did not reconcile the feuding families. Tragically, the child was killed, and the girl, unable to bear her husband’s death, committed suicide. It is said that after their deaths, God rained stones to punish the quarreling villagers.
- Uchisar Castle - Dating back to the Roman and Byzantine periods, some research suggests the castle’s construction may have occurred between the 4th and 1st centuries BC. The castle, which has endured from ancient times to the present, was most intensively used in the mid-17th century AD by Christian monks and has served defensive purposes from that period to today.
- Pigeon Valley - Pigeon Valley, one of Cappadocia’s most beautiful spots, has been welcoming visitors for years with its stunning views and the famous sunset seen from Uçhisar Castle. This expansive valley between Uçhisar and Göreme is named after pigeons. Legend has it that pigeon breeding began in the 9th century, and locals discovered that pigeon manure was beneficial for grape cultivation. As a result, the rock-carved nests that stand out today were created when agricultural workers chose the valley over houses to boost productivity.
- The Three Beauties (Uc Guzeller) - The Three Beauties, a significant symbol of Cappadocia, are believed to represent a shepherd in the front, a child in the middle, and a princess in the back. It is thought that these formations symbolize a family, and childless families are said to walk up and down the slope next to these fairy chimneys seven times to increase their chances of having children.
- Pasabag - Monk’s Valley is notable for its fairy chimneys with multiple caps or heads and its historical significance as a former home for monks. The valley was named after the monks who sought solitude and a place for prayer within these natural structures. Some fairy chimneys in the valley were carved into monasteries, chapels, and living quarters by these monks, making it an important site for historical and religious studies.
Both Paşabağ (Monk’s Valley) and other areas within Cappadocia, such as Göreme, Avanos, and Ürgüp, offer a rich exploration experience of unique geological formations, historical cave churches, and underground cities. Cappadocia’s landscape is a testament to both natural processes and human endeavor, making it a fascinating destination for tourists worldwide.
