Sigiriya: The Ancient Rock Fortress - Known locally as the Eighth Wonder of the World, this ancient palace and fortress complex holds great archaeological significance and draws thousands of tourists annually. It is arguably the most popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya Citadel Rock
The palace is situated in the island’s center, between Dambulla and Habarane, on a vast rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level.
The Sigiriya rock plateau, formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, rises 200 meters above the surrounding jungles.
Visitors are amazed by the unique blend of nature and human creativity.
Pidurangala Rock - Pidurangala is a massive rock located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya. The two rocks share a connected history: while King Kasyapa was constructing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he relocated monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock. An ancient cave temple still contains artifacts from various eras that reflect Buddhist, Hindu, and Western beliefs, and the stupa to the left of the temple entrance is thought to mark the site where King Kasyapa was cremated. Pidurangala presents a more challenging climb than Sigiriya, so it is not recommended for those with low physical fitness. There is no defined path to the top: steep, uneven steps lead to a field of boulders and crevices that climbers must navigate to reach the summit. From the top, there are breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and an incredible view of the majestic Sigiriya Rock.

Dambulla Royal Cave Temple and Golden Temple - The stunning Royal Rock Temple complex is located about 160m above the road in southern Dambulla. Five distinct caves house approximately 150 magnificent Buddha statues and paintings, some of Sri Lanka’s most significant and evocative religious art. Buddha images were first created here over 2000 years ago, and over the centuries, subsequent kings have added to and enhanced the cave art.
From the caves, there are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside; Sigiriya is clearly visible about 20km away.
Minneriya National Park - Minneriya National Park is likely the most easily accessible national park from the cultural triangle.
The largest seasonally recurring gathering of wild elephants occurs between July and September at Minneriya (and Kaudulla) National Park. Over 300 elephants may congregate on the seasonally drying lake bed in Minneriya National Park.
This gathering is listed by Lonely Planet as one of the Top Ten wildlife spectacles in the world. The list includes renowned natural events such as the great wildebeest migration in Serengeti, brown bears feasting in Alaska, the penguin rookery in the Atlantic, the Monarch butterfly migration in Mexico, orca feeding in Argentina, starling roosting in England, and the salmon run in South Africa.
Although the months when the elephant gathering occurs offer the best experience, a safari tour of Minneriya National Park is a rewarding experience any day of the year.
While elephants are the main attraction, Minneriya is home to more than 160 species of birds, some of which are endemic to Sri Lanka, such as the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, the Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, and the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill.
Large mammals, including sloth bears, Sambar deer, and axis deer, as well as smaller mammals like the Purple-Faced Langur, Toque Macaque, and the Grey Slender Loris, inhabit Minneriya National Park.
Guidance from a local specialized guide makes this experience even more memorable.
