It is the southernmost city in the country, located along the TrebiĆĄnjica River in East Herzegovina. As of 2013, the population was 31,433. The old town area dates back to the 18th-century Ottoman era and features the ArslanagiÄ Bridge.
Situated in the TrebiĆĄnjica River valley at the base of Leotar Mountain in southeastern Herzegovina, Trebinje is approximately 30 km (19 mi) by road from Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the Adriatic coast. The river is lined with several mills and bridges, including three within Trebinje and the historic Ottoman ArslanagiÄ Bridge nearby. The river is extensively used for hydroelectric power. After flowing through the Popovo Polje region southwest of the city, the river, which floods every winter, naturally travels underground to the Adriatic near Dubrovnik. Trebinje is affectionately known as âthe city of the sun and platan treesâ and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It serves as the economic and cultural hub of Eastern Herzegovina.
