Erice a Sicilian jewel that speaks of culture, science and peace - Erice is an extraordinary city, rich in history, culture and traditions that make it an unmissable destination in Sicily. Walking through its medieval streets means taking a real journey through time, surrounded by churches, museums and monuments of great charm. Among the main attractions is the Tower of King Frederick, dating back to the time of the First Punic War, when Rome and Carthage competed for control of the Mediterranean. Do not miss the Real Duomo, a splendid example of a Gothic church built by King Frederick III of Aragon, and the impressive Monastery of SS. Salvatore, who guards the “crypt” used for the burial of the nuns: a place of great historical and emotional impact. Also worth a visit are the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Church of St. Julian, the Church of St. Charles and that of St. Peter. Imposing and fascinating is the Castle of Venus, built by the Normans on a rocky esplanade overlooking the city of Trapani, from which you can admire the salt pans and the Egadi Islands. A few steps away are the Balio Garden, with its adjoining castle, and the ancient Cyclopean Walls, an authentic work of military engineering to defend the city. The Spanish Quarter, built to house the garrison of Spanish soldiers, is also very characteristic. Erice is not only history and architecture: it is also a centre of international importance for science. The Center for Scientific Culture Ettore Majorana, where thanks to the contribution of Prof. Antonio Zichichi, has hosted scientists and Nobel Prize winners from all over the world for decades. Right here, in 1982, the famous “Declaration of Erice” was drafted, an important document calling on governments to reduce stockpiles of nuclear weapons and to take action against proliferation. Finally, Erice also conquers for his cuisine. There are many restaurants and trattorias where you can taste Sicilian specialties, but a must is undoubtedly the Pasticceria Grammatico, famous for its typical sweets. In addition to the classic Sicilian desserts, the “Genovese” is highly recommended, a specialty from Erice with a particular shape that recalls the hat of Genoese sailors: an authentic delight. In conclusion, Erice is a place that combines art, history, science and gastronomy, giving the visitor a unique and unforgettable experience. A destination that remains in the heart and that absolutely deserves to be experienced. Tip: reach Erice by cable car from Trapani to enjoy a wonderful view throughout the ascent.

A great short day trip - Vincenzo the driver was excellent. He gave us a thorough background on Erice and provided us with maps and printed details of the history of Erice. The views of Trapani, the sea, and the mountains are amazing. The town itself has incredible architecture.

Beautiful Erice - Arrived on Windstar cruise ship and enjoyed time with Driver/Guide in Erice. Advice to wear good walking shoes as streets are very steep and walkway limestone pavers can be slippery at times.
