Tour of Stari Bar and Ulcinj, Montenegro from Tirana
First Stop: Tirana to Buna Lake
Departing from Tirana at 8:00 AM, the journey heads north towards the Montenegrin border. The route passes through Shkoder, the largest city in northern Albania, with the border situated just before the city. Along the way, travelers will witness various castles perched atop hills, serving as historical reminders of past wars, revolts, and challenges.
A stop by the Buna River offers a breathtaking view of “Rozafa Castle” and its captivating, albeit intense, legend of ancient devotions and sacrifices. A short break will be taken here.
Second Stop: Tour of Stari Bar
Crossing the Montenegrin border, the journey continues for another hour on a winding road to reach Stari Bar. Unlike other coastal fortress-style cities, this old town is located on a hill at the base of Mt. Rumija. As you navigate through Bar’s suburbs, the haunting ruins of Stari Bar will come into view. With mountains as a backdrop, this is arguably one of Montenegro’s most picturesque spots. The fortress base is lined with numerous restaurants and souvenir shops offering Olive Oil, Pomegranate Syrup, and a variety of local delicacies and sweets, all expertly crafted by local artisans. Although now in ruins, the fortress of Bar and the city within once comprised 240 buildings, including clock towers, mosques, churches, cathedrals, residences, and more. Exploring the ruins immerses visitors in history, with each stone narrating a story.
Third Stop: Tour of Ulcinj
Following Stari Bar, the next destination is the coastal city of Ulcinj. Located near the Albanian border, this city is significant for both the economy and tourism of the country. The tour of Ulcinj includes visits to both the Old Town and the coastal area. Despite being damaged by an earthquake in 1979, the Old Town retains remarkable architectural and cultural value. While exploring, visitors will encounter numerous cafes, restaurants, and scenic views of the Adriatic. Notably, two statues can be found here.
One statue depicts the legendary Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, who, according to legend, was once a slave in Ulcinj. It is believed that the character Dulcinea from his novel Don Quixote was inspired by a local woman.
