Among the archaeological sites of Vesuvius, buried after the dramatic eruption of 79 A.D., Oplontis is likely the one that provides the most significant monumental evidence of the Pompeian suburb. A knowledgeable local archaeologist will guide visitors through these unforgettable places!
Currently, the only accessible monument of ancient Oplontis is a large residential villa, believed to have belonged to Poppaea Sabina, the second wife of Emperor Nero, or possibly her family’s estate, as suggested by an inscription on an amphora mentioning Sucundus, her slave or freedman. This site is truly remarkable: the wall paintings remain vibrant in color and detail even today, leaving visitors utterly AMAZED!
Stabiae held an important strategic and commercial role, featuring numerous villas in scenic locations, primarily designed for residential use, with expansive living areas, spa facilities, porches, and beautifully adorned nymphs.
Currently, visitors can explore ‘Villa S. Marco,’ the largest of the Roman ‘villas,’ and ‘Villa Arianna,’ the oldest, named after the large mythological painting found on the back wall of the triclinium.
It is truly fascinating to witness how the eruption was so destructive, even in the smaller villages—not as large as Pompeii and Herculaneum—and how everything has been so well preserved!
