Journey to Awassa

Tiya World Heritage Site - Head south from Addis Ababa through Butajira. Along the way, explore the archaeological sites of Tiya (an ancient stelae field and UNESCO World Heritage Site), Adadi Maryam (a rock-hewn church akin to those in Lalibela), and Melka Kunture (a prehistoric tool-making site). The day’s final destination is Awassa. Overnight stay in Awassa (hotel).

Travel from Awassa to Dorze

Awasa - After breakfast, visit the fish market on the shores of Lake Awassa, then drive to Dorze, located in the highlands above Arba Minch. The Dorze people are renowned for their tall, beehive-like houses and exquisite cotton weaving. Visit the village to learn about the daily lives of these industrious people. If it’s market day (Monday and Thursday in Dorze village, Tuesday and Saturday in nearby Chencha), the market will be visited.

Journey to Arba Minch

Arba Minch - In the morning, visit the local market in Dorze (Monday and Thursday) or Chencha (Tuesday and Saturday). Then, continue driving to Arba Minch. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see the “crocodile market” and local hippos.

Travel from Arba Minch to Turmi

Turmi - After breakfast, depart from Arba Minch to Turmi. En route, pass through the village of Weyto (market day Saturday), home to the Tsemai tribe. Continue through the Weyto Valley to Erbore for a brief visit to a local Erbore village (market day is Saturday). Finally, proceed to Turmi, home of the Hamer tribe. At night, witness the traditional night dancing of the Hamer tribe, known as evangadi.

Visit the Dassenech Tribe

Omorate - In the morning, take a day trip to Omorate to visit the Dassenech tribe. Cross the Omo River by local boat to enter a Dassenech village. Afterwards, return to Turmi (Monday is market day) to visit a local Hamer village. If the Jumping of the Bulls traditional Hamer coming-of-age ceremony is happening, it will be visited.

Journey to the Omo River

Omorate - Depart early from Turmi to the village of Kangatan. Cross the Omo River and take a short walk through local fields to visit a Nyangatom tribe village. After the visit, return across the river and proceed to the Karo village of Korcho, which offers a stunning view over the Omo River. The Karo people, though the smallest tribe in the Omo Valley, are known for their elaborate decorations. After the visit, return to Turmi for another chance to see the Jumping of the Bulls. Overnight in Turmi (camping, basic hotel, or lodge).

Travel to Jinka

Jinka - Depart for Jinka via Dimeka and Key Afar. Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days in Dimeka, one of the most vibrant markets in the area, attracting many tribes, including Hamer, Benna, and Karo. Continue to Jinka afterwards.

Drive through Mago National Park to Mursi and Ari Village

Journey to Konso

Konso - After breakfast, leave Jinka for Konso via Key Afar. Thursday is market day in Key Afar, where the Benna and Tsemai tribes trade goods. This is another popular market in the region. After the visit, proceed to Konso (market days are Mondays and Thursdays).

Konso to Yabello

Yebelo - The Konso people are famous for their wooden statues, known as wakas, erected in honor of deceased heroes, and their innovative agricultural terracing. Visit a local village and the cultural museum displaying many waka statues. If time permits, visit the “natural New York Village,” named for its tall sand formations resembling skyscrapers. After the visit, continue to Yabello. If time allows, visit the Yabello Wildlife Sanctuary for a chance to see zebras.
