• Muscle Shoals - Residents of Muscle Shoals often say that music is in the water. The area is the birthplace of W. C. Handy, known as “The Father of the Blues.” His home is a local attraction. Sun Studio and Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, also known as “The Father of Rock and Roll,” was born in Florence, just across the river.

• Rock Springs Nature Trail - Ahead lies a beautiful spring worth visiting. It’s located along the Rock Spring Nature Trail. A short half-mile loop walking trail leads to a bubbling spring.

• Wilson’s Headquarters & Camp Historical Marker - To view their campsite, which consists of a small sign at the historical marker, turn left off the parkway at county road 14 after the small bridge. Otherwise, continue driving.

• Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall - The late Tom Hendrix dedicated over 30 years to building what is now the largest unmortared wall in the country. The mile-long wall honors Hendrix’s great-great-grandmother, Te-lah-nay, and her journey on the Trail of Tears.

• Florence Indian Mound and Museum - The Florence Mound and hundreds of others across the Southeast were cultural centers where people lived, traded across vast networks, and buried their dead. The Florence Mound measures 145 feet by 95 feet at its top.

• Laurel Hill Lake - This might be the first mention of fishing on the Trace. Is that of interest? If rods and reels are packed, a side trip three miles east to Laurel Hill Lake is possible. This state-managed lake is one of several in Tennessee designed for anglers.

• Meriwether Lewis Campground- Natchez Trace - The Meriwether Lewis Campground is one of only three campgrounds on the Parkway itself—the others being Rocky Springs and Jeff Busby—and the only one in Tennessee. Fortunately, there are no fees to camp here.

• Swan View Overlook - The first parking area on the right is for Fall Hollow, a small waterfall. Only a few steps from the car are needed to see it. Jackson Falls, coming up later, is more impressive, but Fall Hollow is still worth a quick stop.

• Devils Backbone Road - Technically, Devil’s Backbone State Natural Area is a park adjacent to the Trace, not directly on it. However, it’s a great spot for a scenic, moderate hike through the woods without many people around. The diversity of plant life is particularly interesting.

• Jackson Falls - Jackson Falls is worth considering for a stop. Before reaching it, She Boss Place, a tobacco farm, and an Old Trace Walk are options. Following these are stunning views from Bakers Bluff.

• Water Valley Overlook - From here, enjoy a roughly 180-degree view across Water Valley. It’s a picturesque example of pastoral Tennessee, with rolling hills, farms, and ponds. The view is usually well-maintained, rarely obscured by brush. It’s a popular spot for stargazing or observing astronomical events like meteor showers.

• Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage - President Andrew Jackson has been mentioned a few times. He is one of the country’s most polarizing historical figures, especially in the South.

• Garrison Creek Trailhead - In the early 19th century, the forest here gave way to an army post, hence the name, where U.S. military troops were stationed to guard against Native Americans defending their ancestral land.

• Leipers Fork - For those unfamiliar with Nashville, it might be surprising to learn that some major celebrities choose to live in the charming, small town of Leiper’s Fork.
