Reflections in Berat: A Journey Through Time and Self-Discovery
In search of solace and self-discovery, I embarked on a journey to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Albania. Join me as I explore the timeless beauty of this historic city and reflect on the personal journey that brought me here.
A Journey to the Heart of Berat
The road to Berat is a winding one, both literally and metaphorically. As our bus meandered through the narrow streets of Belshi, I found myself reflecting on the journey that had brought me here. The end of a long-term relationship had left me adrift, and I had turned to travel as a means of self-discovery. Eastern Europe, with its rich history and complex cultural tapestry, had become my canvas for introspection.
Our guide, Klajdi, was a beacon of light-heartedness amidst the brooding landscape. His humor and knowledge were a balm to the soul, and his use of a WhatsApp group to keep us informed was a modern touch that I appreciated. As we approached Berat, the anticipation in the bus was palpable. This UNESCO World Heritage site, with its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, promised a day of exploration and reflection.
The Timeless Beauty of Berat Castle
Berat Castle loomed above us, a testament to the passage of time and the resilience of human endeavor. As we climbed its ancient walls, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the city below. It was a moment of clarity, a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the world, even amidst personal turmoil.
Klajdi’s guidance was invaluable as we navigated the castle’s labyrinthine paths. His stories of Byzantine churches and the history of the fortress brought the stones to life. It was easy to lose oneself in the past, to imagine the lives of those who had walked these paths before us. The castle was a microcosm of Berat itself, a place where history and modernity coexisted in harmony.
Reflections by the Osumi River
After the structured exploration of the castle, we were given free time to wander the old quarters of Mangalemi and Gorica. Separated by the Osumi River, these neighborhoods were a study in contrasts. The iconic Gorica Bridge connected them, a symbol of unity amidst diversity.
As I strolled along the riverbank, I found myself lost in thought. The journey to Berat had been more than just a physical one; it had been a journey inward, a chance to confront the ghosts of my past and find peace in the present. The beauty of the town, with its timeless architecture and vibrant culture, was a reminder that life, like travel, is a series of moments to be cherished.
The day ended with a leisurely lunch in the new part of Berat, a chance to savor the flavors of Albania and reflect on the day’s experiences. As we made our way back to Tirana, I felt a sense of contentment. The trip to Berat had been a journey of discovery, both of a place and of myself. It was a reminder that even in the midst of change, there is beauty to be found, if only we take the time to look.
