Positioned southwest of Elbasan, the town is nestled along the banks of Belsh Lake, providing a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts. Its burgeoning eco-tourism thrives on a rich historical background and a welcoming community atmosphere.
- Berat Castle - Gracefully situated on a rocky hill, Berat Castle is a fortress with roots tracing back to the 4th century BCE. Unlike many ancient fortresses, it remains inhabited, with residents living in homes that have stood for centuries. Within the castle’s walls, visitors can explore Byzantine churches and the remnants of mosques.
- National Iconographic Museum Onufri - The Onufri National Iconographic Museum, located in Berat, Albania, is dedicated to Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art. Named after Onufri, a distinguished 16th-century Albanian icon painter, the museum is situated within the historic Cathedral of St. Mary’s Dormition, inside the walls of Berat Castle.
- Holy Trinity Church - This location is particularly photogenic, especially during sunset. Visitors often capture images of the church set against the backdrop of the city and the Osum Valley.
- St. Mary of Blachernae Church - Situated within the Berat Castle complex, visitors can explore the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, primarily dating from the 13th century and adorned with exquisite 16th-century frescoes. Despite its modest exterior, the interior is rich with religious art.
- Ruins of the Red Mosque - Located within Berat Castle, these ruins are a fascinating testament to the Ottoman influence in Albania.
- Old Town Berat - The old town of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, consists of three distinct and historic districts: the Kala (Castle), Mangalem, and Gorica. Divided by the Osum River and set against a mountainous backdrop, this living museum showcases well-preserved Ottoman and Byzantine architecture and centuries of religious harmony.
- Halveti Teqe - This Sufi lodge is celebrated for its stunning interior, featuring an intricately painted wooden ceiling embellished with 14-carat gold. As a significant cultural monument of Albania, the tekke is a testament to the region’s rich Islamic and architectural heritage.
- Gorica Bridge - The Gorica Bridge is a historic Ottoman-era stone bridge in Berat, Albania, and is considered a symbol of the city. The elegant seven-arched structure spans the Osum River, serving as a vital link between the predominantly Muslim Mangalem and the Christian Gorica neighborhoods.

Highly recommend this tour and tour guide - If you want to immerse yourself in Albanian history and culture in a short amount of time, I highly recommend booking with Ilir Gramo. I spent two full days with him visiting Berat and Shkodër and was blown away by his depth of knowledge. He has a way of sharing the country's complex history and culture that is incredibly engaging and insightful.
Ilir is also wonderfully flexible and friendly. He is happy to move at your pace, and for those who enjoy it, he will ensure there is plenty of time to shop for local crafts and souvenirs. During our group tour to Berat, there were only two of us, and despite us being quite camera-shy and 'unphotogenic,' he managed to capture many fantastic photos of us. He is an excellent tour guide, photographer and a true professional. Whether you are looking to see the capital or the surrounding cities, Ilir is the perfect guide.

Wonderful visit to Berat with Ilir - Berat was a fascinating destination, and our guide Ilir was an exceptional facilitator and resource. I have used the services of dozens of guides in four decades of visiting southern Europe, and Ilir is certainly in the top 5%. Very personable, knowledgeable, and patient, flexible and willing to address the interests of the group. The winery/farm-to-table Alpeta that we visited after Berat was a wonderful suggestion of Ilir's and is really a destination in itself. Great food and remarkable landscape.

Berat, the Fortress, and the Guide Highlight An Enjoyable Day. - My wife and I toured Berat with Ilir. Both the fortress and our guide highlighted the day. The fortress tells the history of Albania in a nutshell, reflecting the multiple rulers, the role of religion and the personality of the people that results. Ilir also shines. Like all memorable guides, he comes across as affable, skillful, knowledgeable and passionate both about the topic and about guiding. He really brought to life the icons of Onufri Museum which even after years of viewing them, I had never truly appreciated. Ilir similarly fanned my enthusiasm for relics such as the “Purple Bible” as well as the lively history of Albania. Ilir also provides commentary about Albanian life and culture on a comfortable drive from Tiranë. An enjoyable day and highly recommended. As an added plus, Ilir takes beautiful pictures.
