- Berat City Tours - Departing from Tirana, the journey heads south to explore one of Albania’s most unique and charming cities. The approximately two-hour drive traverses gentle, low-lying terrain in one of Albania’s most fertile agricultural regions.
- Berat Castle - Berat Castle and Elbasan Castle are the only two historical sites in Albania where life has continuously evolved over the past two centuries. The massive stones in the foundation of the walls date back to antiquity when the city flourished under the name Antipatrea.
The castle is the oldest neighborhood in the historical area, predominantly inhabited by an Orthodox population and featuring many delightful Byzantine churches. Perched atop a hill, this castle commands the city today and is naturally shielded on three sides by steep terrain. The community within has resided in the castle for centuries, forming a strong, familial bond.
- National Iconographic Museum Onufri - Situated within the Greek Orthodox monastery, “The Dormitory of St Mary,” this museum is one of the most fascinating in terms of religious heritage. The church itself, a typical Byzantine, dual-cross-shaped structure with two domes, is one of the best-preserved churches in Albania. In addition to its magnificent iconostasis and spectacular paintings in the nave, it is believed to have been adorned with a decorative rosette above the main dome.
The Icon Museum primarily showcases paintings by Onufri and his followers, as well as works by an anonymous painter from the period. These artworks testify to the city’s high intellectual level.
- Mangalem - Based on archaeological excavations and documents, Berat experienced a resurgence in the 13th century, particularly within the castle. The city grew, leading to an increase in population and the expansion of dwellings outside the castle. Mangalem was primarily structured during the Ottoman period and took its current form after an earthquake that destroyed parts of the city. The architectural style transitioned from heavy towers with small windows and stone to lighter structures with more windows.
- Gorica Bridge - In the 17th and 18th centuries, Berat was one of Albania’s most significant cities, attracting people from across the country to settle around it. Gorica emerged as a merchant quarter, especially with settlers from Voskopoja in southeastern Albania. The city’s white color and style were preserved, creating a city with two similar faces on either side of the Osumi River, connected by the Stone Bridge of Gorica.
- Durres - Since antiquity, Durres has been one of Albania’s most important cities, at least until 1920 when Tirana became the capital. It dates back to antiquity as one of the main ports in the Mediterranean. For the Romans, it was a crucial station on the “Via Egnatia,” a Roman merchant road.
A magnificent amphitheater, seating around 20,000, was constructed.
