Setting Sail on Lake Arenal

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America’s most renowned beaches. But when I heard about the opportunity to stand up paddleboard on Lake Arenal, with its breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano, I knew I had to experience it for myself. My wife and I, always eager for a new adventure, decided to make the trip to Tilaran and see what all the fuss was about.

The journey began with a friendly pick-up from Desafío Tours. Our guide, Kristín, and the driver were not only welcoming but also incredibly knowledgeable about Costa Rica’s rich natural landscape. The ride to the lake was filled with stories of the region’s history and wildlife, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. As we approached Lake Arenal, the sheer size of it took my breath away. A Serendipitous Encounter

As we made our way back to shore, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the day’s adventure. But the surprises weren’t over yet. On our drive back, I mentioned to Kristín how I wished I could have seen a sloth during our trip. Almost as if on cue, we came across a small crowd gathered by the roadside. Our driver pulled over, and Kristín, ever prepared, whipped out a telescope. There, nestled in the trees, was a sloth, lazily going about its day.

It was the perfect ending to an already unforgettable day. As we watched the sloth, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of Costa Rica and the incredible experiences it offers.
