Floods and Fortitude: A Memorable Tour of Marble Mountains and Hoi An

When record-breaking floods hit during my tour of Marble Mountains and Hoi An, I discovered the true spirit of adventure. Join me as I navigate the unexpected with the help of local experts.

Navigating the Unexpected: A Rainy Day Adventure

When I set out to explore the Marble Mountains and Hoi An from Chan May Port, I was prepared for a day of cultural immersion and scenic beauty. What I didn’t anticipate was the record-breaking flooding that would accompany my journey. As a seasoned traveler, I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected, and this trip was no exception.

The day began with a photo opportunity at the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang. The Han River was already showing signs of rising, but the atmosphere was still calm. Our guide, Destiny, and driver, Tommy, exuded a sense of calm and efficiency that put everyone at ease. Their expertise in navigating the area was evident as we made our way to the Marble Mountains.

The Marble Mountains, a cluster of five hills named after the elements, offered a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural history. Despite the rain pouring down like a waterfall, the caves and temples were a sight to behold. The marble sculpture factory was an interesting stop, though not particularly budget-friendly unless you’re in the market for a large souvenir. As the rain intensified, I couldn’t help but admire the resilience of our guides and the beauty of the landscape.

Embracing the Elements in Hoi An

Our next destination was the ancient town of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known for its well-preserved architecture and vibrant culture, Hoi An is a photographer’s dream. However, the weather had other plans. Within an hour of our arrival, the streets began to flood. Destiny, our knowledgeable guide, informed us that the waters could rise to the rooftops by evening, a prediction that unfortunately came true.

Despite the challenging conditions, we managed to enjoy a taste of local cuisine at Banh Mi Phuong, a spot made famous by Anthony Bourdain. The banh mi was a delightful blend of flavors, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of the region. As we continued our tour, the rising waters added an unexpected layer of adventure to our exploration.

Destiny’s passion for her hometown was infectious, and her insights into the history and culture of Hoi An made the experience all the more enriching. Her dedication to ensuring we had a memorable visit, despite the weather, was truly commendable. As we wrapped up our tour with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Hoi An in such a unique way.

A Safe Return and Future Plans

As the day came to a close, Tommy safely navigated the flooded streets to return us to Chan May Port. The tour buses from the cruise ship had either been canceled or forced to turn back, leaving many travelers disappointed. In contrast, our private tour with Tommy and Destiny was a testament to the value of local expertise and personalized service.

Reflecting on the day’s events, I realized that the unexpected challenges had only added to the richness of the experience. The resilience and resourcefulness of our guides, coupled with the beauty of the region, left a lasting impression. While the weather was far from ideal, the adventure was unforgettable.

I left Hoi An with a newfound appreciation for the town and its people, and a promise to return during a drier season. For fellow travelers seeking an authentic and budget-friendly adventure, I highly recommend this tour for its unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Just be sure to check the weather forecast before you go!
