Rodoviária de Petrópolis - Begin the journey with a pick-up and transfer from Petropolis Terminal Station or your accommodation, embarking on an expedition through Serra dos Órgãos.
Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos - The first day of the Petrópolis to Teresópolis crossing is the most challenging. The 7 km hike to the Castelos do Açu mountain shelter involves an elevation gain of approximately 1100 meters. The trail to Açu mountain traverses a dense forest with a steep climb to the Pedra do Queijo viewpoint. The path then becomes slightly less steep until reaching the Ajax viewpoint, which offers a natural water source. After Ajax, the trail presents the most difficult section of the ascent to the Açu castles: the Isabeloca mountain. This climb is named after a supposed visit by Princess Isabel. Once past Isabeloca, the trail crosses the Chapadão do Açu, a ridge, before arriving at the Açu castles.
Morro Do Açu - The view from the top of the Açu castles is a spectacular way to end the first day. From this vantage point, one can see all of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay, as well as the entire mountain range of Serra dos Órgãos.
Overnight mode: Camping at Açu Castles Peak
Açu Castles Camp to Pedra do Sino Camp (10 km)
Morro Do Açu - The second day is undoubtedly the most scenic of the Petrópolis to Teresópolis crossing. The entire route maintains an average altitude of 2,000 meters.
Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos - The trail crosses a valley and ascends to the top of Morro do Marco. It continues over another section of rocky summits, where navigation is tricky until reaching a section known as The Elevator. The Elevator is a ladder made of steel rebar embedded in a steep rock, providing access to the summit of Morro do Dinossauro. At the top of Morro do Dinossauro, the first stunning view of Pedra do Garrafão and Pedra do Sino stones is revealed. From there, the descent to Vale das Antas begins, and the trail continues to the summit of Morro da Baleia, offering views of the rock wall of Pedra do Sino, Garrafão, and the trail channel where The ‘Cavalinho’ passage is located. The ‘Cavalinho’ (The small horse) is so named because overcoming this rock requires a movement similar to mounting a horse. The trail follows the channel until it reveals Pedra do Sino and reaches a fork that provides access to its summit and Shelter #4.
Pedra do Sino - Pedra do Sino is the highest point of the crossing, standing at 2275 meters. Its summit offers an incredible 360º view, showcasing several mountain ranges in the region and the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Overnight mode: Camping at Pedra do Sino Peak
Pedra do Sino Camp to Teresópolis Headquarters (12 km)
Pedra do Sino - The third day is the least physically demanding of the crossing. The trail extends for approximately 12 km to the Teresópolis park dam, the final crossing point. During the descent, two waterfalls are visited. The highlight is the Véu de Noiva (Veil of the Bride) waterfall in Teresópolis, which stands 16 meters tall. At certain times of the year, it can become completely dry. The trek concludes at Teresópolis City, where the God’s Finger Mountain Range rock formation can be seen. Drop-off at your accommodation.
