A Journey into the Wild and Prehistoric

Our family has always been drawn to places where history and nature intertwine, and the Hoo Zoo in Telford offered just that. As a museum curator, I am constantly on the lookout for experiences that blend education with entertainment, and this zoo promised a unique combination of live animals and animatronic dinosaurs. It was a perfect opportunity to engage our children in a day of learning and fun.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff who made us feel right at home. The zoo’s family-run atmosphere was immediately apparent, setting it apart from the more commercialized zoos we’ve visited in the past. Our first stop was the Carnivore Combo experience, where we had the chance to interact with some of the zoo’s most fascinating residents. Although we were saddened to hear about the passing of the owl, the substitution of Consuela the skunk was a delightful surprise. Her gentle nature and striking appearance captivated us all, especially our children, who were thrilled to hold and stroke her.

The highlight of the experience was undoubtedly the opportunity to hand-feed the foxes. Our daughter, who is usually quite squeamish, showed remarkable courage as she fed the Arctic fox Lumie and the red fox. Lumie’s inquisitive nature and the red fox’s lazy demeanor on that warm afternoon provided a memorable encounter that we will cherish for years to come. The knowledgeable keeper guided us through the experience, ensuring we felt comfortable and unrushed.

Exploring the Enclosures

With the Carnivore Combo behind us, we set out to explore the rest of the zoo. Contrary to some reviews, we found the park to be expansive and filled with engaging exhibits. Our children were particularly enchanted by the lemur enclosure, where the absence of barriers allowed for an intimate interaction with these curious creatures. A mother lemur proudly displayed her new baby, and the sight of the little one clinging to her back was a heartwarming moment that resonated with all of us.

The wallaby enclosure was another highlight, though the wallabies seemed more interested in their recent meal than in us. We made a mental note to visit them earlier next time. The sheep and goats, however, were more than happy to accept the remainder of our animal food, much to the delight of our children.

As we continued our journey, we stumbled upon the animatronic dinosaurs, which were as realistic as promised. The attention to detail in these prehistoric beasts was impressive, and our children were fascinated by the lifelike movements and sounds. It was a wonderful way to introduce them to the wonders of the past, sparking their curiosity and imagination.

A Perfect Family Day Out

Our visit to the Hoo Zoo was not just about the animals and dinosaurs; it was about creating lasting memories as a family. The zoo’s thoughtful amenities, such as the reasonably priced café and the self-serve slush and ice cream machines, added to the overall experience. The free fruit and lollipops for children at the checkout were a lovely touch, reflecting the zoo’s commitment to family-friendly fun.

We took advantage of the various picnic areas and handwashing stations, which were conveniently located throughout the park. The playground was a hit with our children, providing them with a chance to burn off some energy before we headed home.

As we left the zoo, we couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. The combination of live animals, animatronic dinosaurs, and engaging activities made for a truly unique experience that appealed to both young and old. We left with a sense of gratitude and excitement, already planning our next visit to this remarkable place.
