Gorgeous Area; Not to Be Missed; Very well organized and Terrific Guide - Don't Use Any Other Company - The Trips and Tramps tour company did an excellent job on this tour and one other we took with them (The Jet Boat + Kepler Track Hike which I will review separately) The Guide picked us up in front of our hotel (just like others) in a small van that I believe had about 12 people. The guide was very informative, friendly , helpful , and accommodating. The guide clearly had been doing this a long time and her experience showed. And she still had lots of enthusiasm We stopped every so often along the way to Milford Sound, which was nice as it broke up the drive. Much of the area is truly gorgeous, and different from one part to the next. Frankly, we loved the landscapes, ponds and other features along the road to Milford Sound, more that we liked Milford. That is not to say Milford was not worth it, it was, just the ride there, and the stops we made along the way, were drop dead gorgeous (Mirror Lake in particular in the morning and the way the sunlight was). The boat on Milford Sound was superb. Good boat and nice guide up one side of the sound to the sea and back the other. Pulling in close to waterfalls and some sea life . The boat is not run by Trips and Tramps and you are not on a small group for the boat ride. I knew this ahead of time, so when many tour companies say small group..it means the tour ...other than the boat. I forget how many people were on the boat, but it looked like a lot boarded, from many different tour companies, but did not seem that crowed on the boat itself. It seems all the tour companies use one of the several boat companies that are there. This too is very well organized. The boat captain and person explaining things did a very very good job, and as i said pulled us in close to see things. Trips and Tramps had given us a sack lunch to take with us to eat on the boat. It was a lot of food; I certainly did not go hungry . A chicken wrap sandwich, muffin, apple, and several other things (I cannot remember all of them) After the boat ride, our guide drove us to an area on the foreshore of the sound for pictures of a water fall and walk through the forest to see various insects, birds, and plants. Again, very informative and a very nice short walk along the sound (Originally i had thought about doing the long hike in the Sound, and so glad i did not). On the way back from Milford Sound we stopped for a short hike up a canyon through the forest along a river and to some rapids and small waterfalls . It was a very nice hike. Not too steep. And very beautiful. We got back to Te Anau on time and everyone was dropped off back at their hotels/accommodations Given how much we enjoyed this tour, the excellent guide, van, lunch etc, and we had a similar excellent experience on our second tour with them (Jet Boat + Kepler Track Hike) I would highly recommend this company One note – the second half of the drive to Milford is along winding roads. Although the guide had mentioned this before we left, and offered anyone who might be prone to car sickness to sit up front, someone else grabbed it first. So, with the winding roads and being stuck in the middle of the van I got a bit nauseous. Fortunately, one of the other guests had some travel sickness pills for me to take on the way back. So I highly recommend taking some pills before and with you, if you have any inclination to get car sick.

100% recommend. Amazing experience - We were so pleased with our experience with Trips&Tramps. Thoroughly recommend this excursion as it is a smaller group so more personal and you get to stop at places the big tours don’t. Our guide was Phil and he was brilliant. Amazing local knowledge and of nature. He was also a really good story teller, telling us all about New Zealand and of Milford. Very engaging and funny. He’s a reall credit to the company. If I were to book again I would only consider booking with Trips&Tramps. We wholeheartedly recommend this company and especially Phil. Thank you for an amazing experience. Sara and Ian. UK.

An unforgettable experience - My family & I had the most amazing and memorable day out in the fiordlands with Trips & Tramps. Pickup was seamless, the van was comfortable and spacious. Geoff was a star! He was so informative and funny, we had a moody 19year old with us on tbh bus and even he couldnt resist cracking a smile at his antics. Though the weather was at times too overcast to see the incredible mountain tops, Geoff remained positive and kept us entertained with facts and stories about the local fauna. The snacks, and sandwiches were also delicious. The boat cruise was incredible, we stood out on the deck at the base of one of the waterfalls and copped a "glacial facial" as Geoff craftily put it - a 10/10 unforgettable experience. On the way back we did a few small walks and were treated to more facts about the local flaura and many picturesque locations for some snaps. We got home on time thanks to some confident & creative driving navigating tourists and minivans on the roads. Would 100% recommend touring with these guys when heading into Milford.

Ideal Milford Sound experience - Amazing day in Milford Sound. This trip from Te Anau to milford sound was amazing, id recommend doing the trip from Te Anau as the distance and overall day is just right. We had Roe as our guide, who gave us consistent knowledge about the region that she clearly knows inside and out. The drive itself is pleasant and then you get to the star of the show, which you only realise how great it is when you arrive. We had clear blue skies for this trip, which was great. However, If I was to recommend anything before booking id check the weather and see if you can experience it in the rain that dramaticises the waterfalls etc. Other than the highlight (boat cruise), we stopped off at severall scenic check points and Roe was on hand to answer any questions especially with the general ecosystem and wildlife. Thanks for a great trip.

A memory for a life time! - On March20, 2026, we thoroughly enjoyed a full day, small group tour to Milford Sound with Olivia. She clearly communicated her knowledge and passion for her "backyard" . Her commentary was helpful and entertaining. She gladly answered our endless questions and enjoyed interacting with each individual traveller. Milford Sound sees hundreds of travellers eachday, but it did not seed crowded or chaotic. Everything was well organized went smoothly. Thank you Olivia for sharing your enthusiasm and helping make a very memorable day such a delight.

A great way to learn about Fiordland and Milford Sound - Our trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound was a highlight of our 3 weeks in NZ. Our guide, Mel, was informative and knowledgable regarding the Fiordland National Park and many of the features. The cruise on Milford Sound was also very enjoyable.

100% Recommend to everyone - wish more Kiwi's would do it - Absolutely loved this day trip with Trips & Tramps. Our guide Ashley was very friendly, organized, knowledgeable and fun. I thought the scenery was breathtaking during our tramp and then the boat cruise blew me away. What a beautiful (almost) untouched place. It would be wonderful if more kiwis would do it. We were in a group with 3 other couples from the USA and one couple from Australia, who were really lovely people. We walked quite quickly but everyone in the group was catered for. I didn't think a guided walk was really necessary, but this was awesome. Defiantly will do it again. Our guide Ashley and the boat captain share a lot of really interesting knowledge and history about the area and I just loved it.
