The Caucasus Mountains are renowned for their stunning beauty and the rich history of the area. The Gergeti Trinity Church, constructed in the 14th century by an unknown architect, stands as the sole cross-cupola church in the Khevi province. The separate bell tower, although built slightly later, dates back to the same era as the church. Its remote position atop a steep mountain, surrounded by the vastness of nature, has made it an emblem of Georgia. In the 18th century, Georgian author Vakhushti Batonishvili noted that during times of peril, valuable relics from Mtskheta, including Saint Nino’s Cross, were safeguarded here. Although religious services were banned during the Soviet era, the church remained a favored tourist attraction. Today, it functions as an active establishment of the Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church.
