Situated in Eastern Georgia, Uplistsikhe (meaning “Lord’s Fortress”) is an abandoned rock-hewn town that played a significant role in Georgian history. Founded in the late Bronze Age, around 1000 BC, it was inhabited until the 13th century AD. Between the 6th century BC and the 11th century AD, Uplistsikhe was a major political and religious center of pre-Christian Kartli, a predecessor of the Georgian state. At its peak, it housed 20,000 people. Today, visitors explore the 40,000-square-meter Shida Qalaqi (Inner City), less than half of the original site, mostly uncovered by archaeologists since 1957.
