Between the 6th century BC and the 11th century AD, Uplistsikhe was a major political and religious center of pre-Christian Kartli, a predecessor of the Georgian state. At its peak, it housed 20,000 people. Today, visitors explore the 40,000-square-meter Shida Qalaqi (Inner City), less than half of the original site, mostly uncovered by archaeologists since 1957.
