- Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble - The next stop is Ananuri Fortress, once a castle and the seat of the eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, a feudal dynasty that governed the region from the 13th century. The castle witnessed numerous battles.
In 1739, Ananuri was attacked by forces from a rival duchy, led by Shanshe of Ksani, and was set ablaze. The Aragvi clan was massacred. However, four years later, local peasants revolted against Shamshe’s rule, killed the usurpers, and invited King Teimuraz II to govern them directly. In 1746, King Teimuraz, with the help of King Erekle II of Kakheti, had to suppress another peasant uprising. The fortress remained in use until the early 19th century. In 2007, the complex was added to the tentative list for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Site program.
- Pasanauri - The next stop, Pasanauri, is a remarkable place and a natural wonder that draws many tourists. Here, visitors can witness the confluence of two rivers – the white Aragvi and the black Aragvi. Remarkably, the flows of the two rivers do not mix, creating a black-and-white stream. Additionally, whitewater rafting on the Aragvi River is available as an optional activity.
- Russian Georgian Friendship Monument - The Friendship Monument is a favorite spot for travelers. Built in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk and the enduring friendship between Soviet Georgia and Soviet Russia, it is located on the Georgian Military Highway between the ski resort town of Gudauri and the Jvari Pass. The monument is a large round stone structure offering stunning panoramic views. Inside, a large tile mural spans the entire circumference, depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history. Nearby, visitors can enjoy a paragliding experience.
- Stepantsminda - Stepantsminda, also known as Kazbegi, is where visitors will find the 5-star hotel “Rooms,” an ideal place for a delightful lunch with amazing views of Kazbegi and the Gergeti Trinity Church, which will be the final destination.
- Gergeti Trinity Church - The final destination is the Gergeti Trinity Church. This ancient church, dating back to the 14th century, stands at an elevation of 2170 meters, overlooking the small town of Stepantsminda, also known as Kazbegi, in the north of the country. Beyond its religious significance, the medieval church served as a hiding place. During various invasions in Georgia’s history, national treasures were concealed there, as it was difficult for enemies to reach. The view from Gergeti Trinity Church includes Mount Kazbegi, one of Georgia’s highest mountains. Today, visitors can reach it by 4WD. The church features a separate bell tower and is located on the route to Mount Kazbegi, which, at 5047 meters above sea level, is Georgia’s third-highest mountain. During Soviet rule in Georgia, religious services were banned, but now many couples, including foreigners, ascend the mountain specifically to hold their wedding ceremonies there.
