Guaram, the leader of Kartli, built a small church next to the cross, known as “a small cross.” In the late 7th century, Guaram’s son, Stepamoz I, built a large temple next to the small cathedral, now known as Jvari Monastery. The wooden cross was enclosed by the temple. The Mtskheta church of Jvari is the first example of cross-shaped churches, a new architectural style.
