- Panjshanbe Market - The Panjshanbe Covered Market is a renowned attraction in Khujand. The name “Panjshanbe” translates to Thursday. While trading occurred on Mondays in Dushanbe, it took place on Thursdays in Khujand. Situated in the heart of Khujand, the market is opposite the mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin. It features a main pavilion surrounded by numerous shops and tents. The market is bustling with activity, attracting both city residents and visitors from nearby villages. The Panjshanbe market is distinguished by its unique architecture and decor. Constructed in the mid-20th century and completed in 1964, the bazaar’s building blends elements of oriental and Stalinist empire styles, with decorations that harmoniously incorporate Soviet and Eastern influences.
- Khujand Fortress - Throughout Khujand’s history, the city’s fortress has been central to its development. Over 2,500 years, the Khujand fortress expanded with the city, faced destruction by conquerors, and was rebuilt. Archaeological excavations revealed that the initial fortress was constructed in the 6th-5th centuries BC, starting as an embankment rampart that evolved into thick walls of raw clay. Additionally, a city wall covered 20 hectares. During the Great Silk Road’s peak, both the fortress and city wall were reconstructed. The city expanded further, dividing into three parts: the citadel, rabad, and shahristan. At that time, the Khujand fortress was a significant city in Central Asia, but it was destroyed by Genghis Khan’s army in 1219-1220. In 1999, a section of the eastern wall of the Khujand fortress, dating back to the 8th-10th centuries, was restored.
- Historical Local Lore Museum of Archeology and Fortification - In 1999, alongside the restoration of the eastern wall of the Khujand fortress, the Museum of History and Local Lore of Archeology and Fortification was established. This museum houses household items, ceramics, and tools discovered at the fortress excavation site. The museum’s collection includes 1,200 exhibits, most of which are accessible to visitors.
- Mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin - This impressive memorial ensemble, located in the city’s historical area, was built over the grave of Muslihiddin Khujandi, a 12th-century ruler and poet of Khujand. Sheikh Muslihiddin was revered as a holy miracle worker. Initially buried in the village of Unji, his followers relocated his remains to the city, where they constructed a mausoleum in the 12th century. The original mausoleum, a small chamber of burnt bricks adorned with terracotta, was destroyed during the Mongol invasion. In the 14th century, the mausoleum was reconstructed. Today, the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum is an architectural ensemble that includes a mosque, a 19th-century minaret (over 20 meters tall), and the mausoleum itself.
