From Surf to Safari: A Sun-Soaked Adventure on the Tarcoles River
In search of a new adventure, I traded my surfboard for a river safari on the Tarcoles River. Join me as I recount my sun-soaked journey through the vibrant ecosystem, where crocodiles and colorful birds reign supreme.
Setting Sail on the Tarcoles River
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves and soaking up the sun along the coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I like to trade my surfboard for a different kind of adventure. This time, it was a Crocodile Safari on the Tarcoles River that caught my attention. The promise of close encounters with the river’s famous crocodiles and a chance to explore the vibrant ecosystem was too tempting to resist.
The journey began with a scenic drive from Puntarenas, where my wife and I had docked our temporary home on the sea. The road to Tarcoles was lined with lush greenery, a stark contrast to the endless blue of the ocean I’m so accustomed to. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a bustling store filled with colorful souvenirs and the welcoming aroma of fresh fruit. After a quick stop to freshen up at the clean facilities, we were ready to embark on our river adventure.
A Dance with Nature
The boat was a comfortable, covered vessel, perfect for a leisurely cruise down the river. Our guide, a knowledgeable local, was quick to point out the diverse wildlife that called the Tarcoles River home. While the water levels were low, making crocodile sightings a bit of a challenge, the abundance of birdlife more than made up for it. Armed with a handy bird identification booklet, we spotted everything from ospreys to scarlet macaws, each more vibrant than the last.
The pilot skillfully maneuvered the boat, ensuring everyone had a chance to see the wildlife up close. It was a dance with nature, as the boat glided through the water, the sun casting a golden glow over the river. The tranquility of the moment was a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled surf sessions I’m used to, but it was a welcome change of pace.
A Refreshing End
As the tour came to an end, we were treated to a refreshing spread of watermelon and drinks back at the store. It was the perfect way to cool down after a sun-soaked adventure on the river. Reflecting on the experience, I realized that while the waves will always call me back, there’s something to be said for the quiet beauty of a river safari.
The Tarcoles River may not have the crashing waves of my favorite surf spots, but it offers a different kind of thrill. It’s a reminder that adventure can be found in the most unexpected places, and sometimes, it’s worth trading the surfboard for a pair of binoculars. Until the next wave calls, I’ll be dreaming of the crocodiles and birds of Tarcoles.
