From Surf to Safari: A Crocodile Adventure in Tarcoles
Trading the waves for a river adventure, I embarked on the Jungle Crocodile Safari and Bird Watching tour in Tarcoles. With the promise of close encounters with crocodiles and a symphony of birds, this experience was one for the books.
A River Adventure Begins
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as my wife and I made our way to the Tarcoles River for a day that promised to be filled with adventure and discovery. As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but this time, I was trading the waves for a boat ride on the river. The Jungle Crocodile Safari and Bird Watching tour had caught my attention, and I was eager to explore the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff and a welcoming garden that set the tone for the day. The dock was easily accessible, and the private parking facilities made the start of our journey smooth and hassle-free. With Santiago as our captain and Hansel as our guide, we embarked on a two-hour journey that promised to be both thrilling and educational.
Up Close with the Giants
As we glided along the river, the initial calmness of the water was deceptive. Santiago and Hansel began pointing out the hidden wonders of the Tarcoles River, and soon, the excitement began to build. The first sighting of a crocodile was nothing short of exhilarating. These ancient reptiles, some measuring over 4 meters in length, were a sight to behold.
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly when Santiago stepped out of the boat to feed one of the crocodiles. The croc, just a few feet away, was both awe-inspiring and terrifying. I couldn’t help but feel a mix of admiration and concern for Santiago’s bravery. We also encountered two massive crocs, affectionately named Osama Bin Laden and Mike Tyson, each with their own unique presence.
A Symphony of Birds
While the crocodiles were the stars of the show, the bird watching aspect of the tour was equally captivating. With over 50 species of birds to spot, the Tarcoles River was a birdwatcher’s paradise. From vibrant kingfishers to majestic herons, the diversity of avian life was astounding.
Hansel’s knowledge of the local wildlife was impressive, and he was more than happy to answer our questions and share interesting facts about the birds and their habitats. The guides’ ability to cater to our interests, stopping longer at places that intrigued us, made the experience all the more personal and enjoyable.
As the tour came to an end, we were left with a newfound appreciation for the rich biodiversity of the Tarcoles River. The Jungle Crocodile Safari and Bird Watching tour had delivered on its promise, offering an unforgettable adventure that was both informative and entertaining. For anyone looking to explore the natural wonders of Costa Rica, this tour is a must-do. Crocodile Safari
