Taos Plaza - The history of Taos Plaza dates back to 1796 when the King of Spain allocated land to 63 families, establishing it as the primary settlement following Taos Pueblo. The plaza was originally designed as a fortified village, featuring homes arranged in large quadrangles with a central gate. It served as a sanctuary for livestock and a center for trade fairs. Although many buildings were destroyed by fire, the structures surrounding the plaza today mostly date from the 1930s. Now the centerpiece of the Taos Historic District, the plaza is a vibrant location for live music, farmers markets, and is a favored destination for shopping and galleries.

La Hacienda de los Martinez - Constructed in 1804, La Hacienda de los Martinez is a rare example of a “Great House” from the Spanish Colonial era in northern New Mexico. Once a bustling trade center, it boasts massive adobe walls and was the residence of Severino Martinez, his wife Maria, and their six children, including the renowned Padre Antonio Martinez. Padre Antonio was a significant social reformer, establishing New Mexico’s first coeducational school and introducing the first printing press to Taos. Today, the Hacienda provides insight into 1800s frontier life with 21 rooms surrounding two courtyards and demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts.
