- Prison Island - Changuu Private Island - The Prison Island tour lasts 3 hours, including a boat ride.
A prison island is an island used as a site for a prison or correctional facility. Throughout history, prison islands have been used to incarcerate individuals convicted of crimes, and they continue to be used in many countries today.
One of the main attractions on Prison Island is the giant tortoise sanctuary, home to over 100 giant Aldabra tortoises. These tortoises are among the oldest living creatures on earth, with some estimated to be over 100 years old. Visitors can feed and interact with the tortoises and learn about their history and conservation efforts.
Other notable landmarks on the island include the ruins of an old prison, which was never actually used to house prisoners, and a small chapel built by the island’s first owner, Sultan Said Majid.
Visitors can take a short boat ride from Stone Town. The island is open to visitors year-round.
- Stone Town - Stone Town is a historic town located on the west coast of Zanzibar Island, part of the Zanzibar archipelago in Tanzania. The town is renowned for its unique blend of African, Arab, and Indian cultures, as well as its well-preserved architecture, reflecting its history as a center of the East African slave trade and a hub of commerce and culture.
Other notable landmarks in Stone Town include the Old Fort, a 17th-century fortification that now hosts cultural events and exhibitions, and the Forodhani Gardens, a waterfront park famous for its nightly street food market.
Visitors to Stone Town can also explore the town’s many mosques, churches, and temples, or take a stroll along the seafront and watch the traditional dhow boats sail by. The town is also a popular starting point for exploring the rest of Zanzibar Island, known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage.
