Begin the Marangu Route, walking through the enchanting rainforest. The path is wide, gravelly, and slightly steep, but the forest is stunning, featuring a small stream, picturesque scenery, and charming waterfalls.
Lunch will be at the Kisamboni picnic area. In about 2 hours, you will arrive at Mandara Huts. Before reaching there, the vegetation transitions to alpine heath and moorland.
Walking Highlights
• Blue monkeys • Colobus monkeys • Maundi Crater • Waterfalls • Colorful birdlife • Lichens and mosses • Variety of flowers.

Enjoy a splendid view of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The vegetation allows for more open vistas, crossing hills and a few dry creeks.
Lunch will be 2 hours before reaching Horombo Huts. (No rush during the walk. Take your time!)
Walking Highlights
• Hills • Kibo Peak • Mawenzi Peak • Colobus monkeys • Giant senecios and lobelias.

Water can be collected here. Cross numerous ridges uphill to the “Saddle,” a plain desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
After lunch, a 2-hour climb to Kibo Hut awaits. Although the path may not appear steep, the hike becomes quite challenging.
The landscape can change dramatically, with windswept areas and large clouds or open skies. This part is truly enjoyable. With Kibo in sight, the challenge ahead for the night becomes clear.

• Open and windswept • Saddle • Alpine desert • Ridge • Last Water Point • Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Dormitory accommodations with limited facilities are available. At night, final preparations for the summit climb are made. Porters assist in repacking essential items.
