Moshi to Forest Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft, 4 miles, approximately 3-4 hours
Departing from Arusha, travel by vehicle to the starting point of the Lemosho Trail at Londorossi Gate. Approaching from the west, the Lemosho Route begins in the Afromontane Rainforest, the first of four ecological zones on Kilimanjaro. Here, the rest of the team is met, and the journey begins at a relaxed pace, with opportunities to spot wildlife. Lunch is enjoyed on the trail, and the camp is reached by mid-afternoon. Overnight stay at Forest Camp.
Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 9,498 ft to 11,500 ft, 5 miles, approximately 5-6 hours
Ascending from the forested slopes of Lemosho, the path leads through a podocarpus and juniper forest, then opens onto a zone of heather and lichen-covered volcanic rock on the Shira Plateau, once Kilimanjaro’s third peak before its collapse. Lunch is taken on the trail, and arrival at camp is in the mid-afternoon. The view of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s peak, is stunning from this location. Overnight stay at Shira 1 Camp.
Shira 1 to Moir Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - 11,500 ft to 13,800 ft, 7 miles, 5-7 hours
Crossing the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth, offers some of the most scenic views during the 3-4 hour hike across moorland meadows to the lunch spot. After lunch, the ascent continues to Moir Camp, arriving in the mid-afternoon. If energy permits, a late afternoon hike in the surrounding Lent Hills is possible, providing an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Overnight stay at Moir Hut.
Moir Hut Camp to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 13,800 ft to 15,223 ft (Lava Tower), descending to 13,044 ft, 7km, 4-6 hours
From Moir, traverse the slopes of Kibo, where few plants or animals can endure the extreme temperature variations and conditions typical of this zone. Lunch is usually taken near the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation. For those feeling strong, an optional climb of the 300-foot Lava Tower is available before descending to Barranco Camp in the afternoon, passing through the unique and beautiful ‘Garden of the Senecios’ (giant groundsel) with many giant lobelias. The Barranco Valley is one of the most picturesque areas of the entire trail. Overnight stay at Barranco Camp.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 13,044 ft to 13,123 ft, 3 miles, 4-5 hours
A relatively short day leads to Karanga Camp after conquering the impressive Barranco Wall. Be prepared to use all four limbs to navigate the wall to the top of the Karanga Valley. From there, follow a path with various inclines and declines to Karanga Camp, arriving in the late afternoon. Choosing Karanga Camp is strategic, as spending significant time at altitude is crucial for safe acclimatization. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular, with views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields towering over 3,000 feet above. Overnight stay at Karanga Camp.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 15,288 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,467 ft, 3 miles ascent, 7 miles descent, 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
Today involves a half-day ascent to Barafu Camp. Lunch is again taken at this high camp, allowing ample time to relax before the summit attempt. The camp is characterized by a desolate alpine desert and, at times, strong winds, yet evenings offer splendid views of Mawenzi Peak. An early dinner is followed by rest for the night. Overnight stay at Barafu Camp.
Barafu to the Summit to Mweka Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - 12,467 ft to 5,380 ft, 6 miles, 3-4 hours
Depart just before midnight for the final summit attempt. Patience and persistence are key to reaching the summit, as this is the coldest, windiest section of the adventure. By dawn, as the first light appears over the Tanzanian landscape, arrive near the rim at Stella Point, at an altitude of 18,652 ft. Here, enjoy one of the most glorious sunrises imaginable, appearing over Mawenzi Peak. Ascending via Stella Point offers a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! After a brief celebration at the summit, begin the joyful descent. Proceed slowly and savor the beautiful rainforest scenery en route to Mweka Camp, arriving before dusk. With each step, the air becomes richer in oxygen, so although the legs may feel weak, the heart will be light. Overnight stay at Mweka Camp.
