Moshi - Machame Gate - Machame Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Just an hour’s drive from Moshi is the entrance to the Machame route. Here, park formalities are completed, the team of porters is met, and the climb begins! The initial part of the route ascends steadily through a stunning, dense rainforest. This path is less traveled, so it can be somewhat overgrown and is often wet and muddy underfoot.
Machame Camp (3010m) to Shira Camp (3845m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a brief descent, the trek towards Shira Cathedral begins. Continuing onward, a remarkable bivi cave is passed just before reaching Shira Camp at 3,700 meters (approximately 12,136 feet), where dinner and an overnight stay await. Today’s climb takes about 5-6 hours.
Shira Cave (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Now walking on high moorland, the landscape transforms the trek’s character. The southwest side of Kilimanjaro is traversed, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, before finally reaching camp. The day is spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but the mountaineering principle of ‘walk high, sleep low’ is followed to help the body acclimatize to the altitude.
Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. A steep exit follows, up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates the group from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the journey continues towards the Karanga valley, the last stop for fresh water before the summit. The terrain now consists of scree as the path leads through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp.
Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The ascent begins around midnight, climbing steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. Scree is climbed for 4 to 5 hours, gaining significant height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. Arrival at the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) coincides with the first rays of sunlight. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround the group, and the views of the jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour of walking leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). The descent begins by returning to Stella Point, then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Trek Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m) - Moshi Town
Mount Kilimanjaro - A gentle trek descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed and certificates are received, ready to be proudly displayed! Vehicles then meet the group for the return to the hotel in Moshi, where a welcome hot shower awaits.

While the Marangu Route offers a gradual incline and hut accommodations, climbers on the Machame Route face steeper trails, cover longer distances, and sleep in tents.
The Machame Route climb can be completed in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is commonly undertaken over seven days (six nights) to allow for better altitude acclimatization. The journey starts at Machame Gate, situated at the southern base of the mountain, amidst its lush, fertile rainforest.
