Day 2 Mti Mkubwa Camp - Shira Camp 1
Kilimanjaro National Park - After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, continue on an ascending path, leaving the rainforest behind. The trail climbs steadily with expansive views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures begin to drop.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3900m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today, enjoy views of the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain with unique perspectives of Kibo. The steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau aids acclimatization and offers great panoramic views. The destination today is Shira 2 Camp. In the afternoon, take an acclimatization walk before returning to camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Begin the trek with an ascent offering far-reaching panoramic views, entering the upland desert climatic zone and walking on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. Reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), the high point for the day and a great spot for lunch. In the afternoon, make a steep descent to the camp for the night, located at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Start the day by descending into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. Exit steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, head towards the Karanga valley. From here, climb steeply up from Karanga valley to the night’s camp at Karanga camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m is available before descending back to camp for the night.

Kilimanjaro National Park - Begin at around midnight, ascending steeply to the summit glaciers. Climb scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. Reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun appear. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walk leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Begin the descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
