Machame Gate - Machame Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,640 meters). Typically, travelers drive from Moshi to the gate, a journey of about an hour. Along the way, they can observe subsistence farming and the town of Machame. The first day’s trek on the Machame Route is extensive (~11km / 7 miles) and takes approximately 5-7 hours to complete. Packed lunches are usually provided, along with 2-3 liters of bottled water. This is the only bottled water supplied, as porters will collect water from mountain streams thereafter. The day’s trek concludes at Machame Camp (2,835 meters), located near the border of the rainforest and low alpine zones. Upon arrival, porters will have already set up the camp and tents, and dinner will be served.
Machame Camp - Shira Camp 2
Mount Kilimanjaro - On the second day, participants rise early, pack their gear, and prepare for the trek from Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters). The trek is relatively steep as it enters the low alpine zone, characterized by moorlands and grasslands. Shira Camp 2 is situated on a plateau, offering the first views of Kibo to the northwest and Mount Meru to the east. Day two takes approximately 4-6 hours and covers a distance of 5km / 3 miles.
Shira Camp - Barranco Camp Via Lava Tower
Mount Kilimanjaro - Day three involves a long and challenging trek east off the Shira Plateau through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’, ascending to Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters, then descending via the Southern Circuit to Barranco Camp (3,900 meters). After lunch, the descent to Barranco Camp follows the ‘walk high, sleep low’ principle of acclimatization. The descent takes about 2 hours and provides excellent opportunities for capturing stunning photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall.
Barranco Camp To Karanga Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - This short but enjoyable day begins with a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. The route then traverses over scree to the Karanga Valley (3,930 meters) beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. The night is spent at Karanga campsite, with this shorter day designed for acclimatization.
Karanga Camp To Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing from Karanga, the trek reaches the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. The journey continues up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, the Southern Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from various angles. Here, the camp is set up, and participants rest and enjoy an early dinner in preparation for the summit day. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.
Barafu Camp To Uhuru Peak
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the early hours of the morning (around midnight), the ascent to the summit begins. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time can be intense. The ascent is made in darkness for several hours, with frequent but brief breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), trekkers are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, the journey reaches Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
From the summit, the descent continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. The trail is rocky and can be tough on the knees; trekking poles are beneficial. Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest, where mist or rain is common in the late afternoon. In the evening, the last dinner on the mountain is enjoyed, followed by a well-deserved rest.
Mweka Camp To Mweka Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - On the final day, the descent continues to Mweka Gate, where summit certificates are collected. At lower elevations, conditions can be wet and muddy. From the gate, the journey continues for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet participants at Mweka Village to transport them back to the hotel in Moshi for a shower. Later, the driver will pick them up for transfer to a hotel of their choice in Moshi, marking the end of the tour.
