Umbwe Gate (1800m) to Umbwe Camp (2850m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After enjoying breakfast at a hotel in Moshi, travelers will be driven to the Umbwe gate (1800m), where they can admire banana plantations upon arrival at the park’s gate. Following registration formalities, they will embark on the first step of a lifelong dream. The picturesque Umbwe route initially follows a forestry track winding through a natural rainforest. It then narrows and steepens to ascend the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe Rivers, surrounded by towering trees. The first camp is nestled among large trees and dense undergrowth.
Umbwe Camp (2850 m) to Barranco Camp (3900m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - As travelers walk through the Montane Forest, shortly after leaving the camp, the forest begins to thin and is eventually replaced by rockier terrain, sparser undergrowth, and straggly, moss-covered trees. The path continues along a stunning ridge. As they ascend, they catch glimpses of Kilimanjaro rising majestically ahead, etched against the blue sky. As they approach the Barranco Valley, the path flattens. The camp is located in the valley below the Breach and the great Barranco wall, offering a memorable sunset while dinner is prepared.
Barranco Camp (3900 m) to Karanga Camp (4000m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, the journey continues up a steep ridge to the great Barranco wall, which turns out to be easier to climb than it appears. At the top of the Barranco wall, travelers can truly appreciate the beauty of Kilimanjaro. With Kibo glaciers soaring overhead, they descend into the lush Karanga Valley campsite. From the camp, they can look east and see the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. After a hot lunch at camp, the afternoon is free for resting or exploring. This short day is crucial for acclimatization as the summit push is about to begin.
Karanga Camp (4000m) to Barrafu Camp (4600 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Another half-day ascent leads to Barafu Camp. Lunch is once again taken at the camp, allowing ample time to relax before the summit attempt. The desolate alpine desert and sometimes strong winds sweep over this camp. In the evening, travelers enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi peak. A relatively early dinner is served before resting for the night.
Barafu Camp (4640 m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) then down to Mweka Camp (3100 m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Travelers will wake up around midnight, with light tea and cookies ready for them. They will climb scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining incredible height over a short distance. The view is spectacular. They should reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5756 m) by sunrise. After a cup of tea, they will continue to UHURU PEAK (5895 m), taking photos for a few minutes before descending to Barafu Camp for some rest and lunch, then proceed to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Mweka Camp (3100m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)
Kilimanjaro Region - Travelers will walk down through the Mweka montane forest to Mweka Gate for 3 hours, where they will complete park formalities and receive certificates. A car will be ready to drive them back to the hotel in Moshi for a warm shower. It’s definitely time to celebrate!
