This species is scattered in upland semi-deciduous forests, mid-altitude, and montane rainforests, at altitudes of (925 –) 1280 – 2150 meters. It is also locally found in riverine forests. The largest known specimen of Entandrophragma excelsum (Swahili: Mkukusu) is located on the slopes of Kilimanjaro (Mbokomu Moshi rural) and measures 81.5 meters, making it the tallest known tree in Africa. It is approximately 14 km from the highway. Nearby, visitors can explore the Mbokomu waterfalls, one of the finest waterfalls in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
