Depart from the vibrant and colorful Moshi early to reach Marangu Gate, the gateway to the breathtaking Kilimanjaro. The drive takes just an hour, but the scenic countryside, with its coffee and banana plantations and the charming Marangu village, will captivate you, as Kilimanjaro majestically looms ahead.
Registration at the Marangu Gate ensures everyone is accounted for before the adventure begins. Initially, the trail is narrow and ridged as it winds through the rainforest. The lush, misty environment features trees draped in moss, with a canopy alive with birdsong and mysterious rustlings—perhaps a colobus monkey? A mongoose might dart across your path. You’ll also encounter weary hikers descending from the summit; give them a congratulatory high five.
The hike to Mandara Hut takes about three hours, providing a perfect opportunity to rest and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Hut. Once refreshed, embark on the short but rewarding walk to the Maundi Crater. On clear days, the views eastward over Taveta and northwest to Mawenzi Peak are breathtaking. Remember to bring your camera! After soaking in the stunning scenery, you’ll hike back down to the Marangu Gate, where a vehicle will be ready to take you, content and tired, back to Moshi. This Kilimanjaro day hike is accessible to most, even if fitness levels are not at their peak!
