Kilimanjaro National Park - 7,742’~2,360m ∙ 3 mi~4.8 km ∙ 3-4 hrs After a refreshing night at the hotel, the journey begins from the western side, checking in at the Londorossi gate. The trail gently ascends through the montane forest, leading to a warm welcome at the camp under the Climb Kili banner, with tents ready and personal belongings inside. Tonight’s camp is nestled in the Kilimanjaro rainforest at Mti Mkubwa, which means Big Tree in Swahili.
MTI MKUBWA to SHIRA CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 11,500’~3,505m ∙ 4.9 mi ~ 8km 5-6 hrs The trek continues out of the forest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichen beards. In the afternoon, the path follows the Shira ridge across the vast high-altitude desert plateau, offering the first views of Mt Kilimanjaro on the horizon, a stunning contrast to the rainforest left behind.
SHIRA CAMP to MOIR CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 13,800’ ~ 4,206m ∙ 8.7 mi ~ 14km∙ 5-7 hrs Today is dedicated to exploring the Shira plateau. The trek heads east toward Kibo’s glaciated peak, with an option to visit the ancient collapsed Shira cone, the oldest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanoes. Arrival at Moir Camp is in a vast gorge at the end of a dormant lava flow.
MOIR CAMP to BARRANCO CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 13,000’ ~ 3,962m ∙ 4.3 mi ~ 7km∙ 4-6 hrs An acclimatization trek to the Lava Tower at 15,000’~4,500m is on the agenda today. Shortly after the tower, the second junction leads to the Arrow Glacier. After resting at the tower, the descent through the enormous Senecio forest reaches a waterfall before concluding at Barranco Camp. Tonight’s camp is in the shadow of the massive Barranco wall, with clouds often carried by the breeze from the Barranco Valley.
BARRANCO to KARANGA CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 13,100’ ~ 3,992m ∙ 2.2 mi~3.2 km ∙ 4-5 hrs Today, the group conquers the great Barranco Valley and ascends the Barranco wall, an adventurous stretch leading into the arctic zone of Kili. The trek continues on the South Circuit path through the Karanga Valley, with camping tonight at Karanga Camp.
KARANGA CAMP to KOSOVO CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 16,000’ ~ 4,876m ∙ 2.6 mi~3.5 km ∙ 5-6 hrs A slow-paced trek to Kosovo Camp is planned for today. Passing Barafu camp offers excellent views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Kosovo Camp is located on an exposed ridge, so familiarization with the terrain before dark is essential. Acclimatization, rest, relaxation, and preparation for the summit day are the focus.
KOSOVO to SUMMIT to MWEKA CAMP
Kilimanjaro National Park - 19,340’~5,895m ∙ 13 mi~21 km (5 km ascent/ 12 km descent) ∙ 6-7 hrs ascent~4-6 hrs descent Tonight is the night! A midnight start to conquer the highest point in Africa. This section of the route is one of the steepest on Kilimanjaro’s non-technical paths. A 6-7 hour hike to Stella Point is planned to witness the sunrise. The journey continues to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, heading northwest and ascending through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This can be the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. From Stella Point, the summit is visible; just 1 hour to Uhuru Peak, the rooftop of Africa! The descent to Mweka Camp follows for dinner and celebration.
MWEKA CAMP to Exit Mweka Gate
