Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trail continues out of the forest into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock adorned with lichen. The ascent through lush hills and across streams leads to the Shira Ridge, followed by a gentle descent to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo across the plateau is breathtaking.

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - A full day is spent exploring the Shira plateau. The gentle walk east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak crosses the plateau to Shira 2 camp, located on moorland meadows by a stream. The journey continues to Moir Hut, a less frequented site at the base of Lent Hills. Various walks on Lent Hills offer excellent acclimatization opportunities. Shira is among the highest plateaus on earth.

Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trek continues east from the Shira Plateau up a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo’s peak. The route then turns southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” After the tower, the second junction leads to the Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft. The descent to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft follows, where rest, dinner, and overnight stay occur. Despite ending at the same elevation as the start, this day is crucial for acclimatization, aiding preparation for summit day.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, the journey continues from Barranco along a steep ridge past the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley campsite. From Karanga, the route connects with the Mweka Trail and ascends to Barafu Hut. Completing the South Circuit offers diverse summit views. Camp is set up here, with rest, dinner, and preparation for summit day. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this location.

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - The ascent to the summit begins early, around 2 am, between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The route heads northwest, ascending through scree to Stella Point on the crater rim.
At Stella Point (18,600 ft), a short rest is taken, offering a chance to witness a magnificent sunrise, weather permitting. From Stella Point, snow may be encountered during the 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent is reached. Faster hikers may see the sunrise from the summit.
The descent continues straight down to Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch.

Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent

Mweka Camp to Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, the descent continues to Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. Lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are likely sufficient, but rain gear and warmer clothing should be kept handy.
From the gate, the journey continues for another hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle awaits to drive back to the hotel in Moshi.
