The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes approximately 50 minutes. The route passes through the village of Machame, situated on the lower slopes of the mountain. Upon leaving the park gate, the trail winds through the rainforest, ascending a ridge. The lower sections of the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. The journey continues for a short distance until reaching Machame Camp.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Today’s trek involves a gentle ascent with panoramic views. The path traverses the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach. After enjoying a hot lunch at the base of the Lava Tower (4,600 m), the descent continues to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley (3,950 m).
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, the trek leaves Barranco and ascends a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250m/13,900ft), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050m/13,250ft) to the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. The journey continues up to Barafu Camp. The South Circuit is completed here, offering views of the summit from various angles. Camp is set with views of the summit in the distance.
Barafu Camp to Summit, down to Mweka Camp

The day of triumph arrives as the final ascent to the summit begins. Depart Barafu Camp (13,000 ft/4000 m) in the early morning hours, heading towards Uhuru Peak (19,343 ft/5895 m). Experience the breathtaking sunrise over the African landscape and relish the surreal feeling of standing atop the “Roof of Africa.” Descend to Mweka Camp (10,150 ft/3090 m) for a well-deserved rest.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, drive to Moshi or Arusha.

After breakfast, the descent continues to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and T-shirts are likely sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Transportation will be waiting at Mweka Gate to drive back to the hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
