- Chefchaouen - Founded in 1471 as a small Kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami, a descendant of Abd As-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, Chefchaouen was established to resist Portuguese invasions in northern Morocco. Many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista (Inquisition) in medieval times, alongside the Ghomara tribes of the region. The city’s iconic blue color originated from this era, as Jewish exiles painted their homes blue to symbolize divinity—a tradition that has endured through the centuries. Recently, the blue hues have spread beyond the Jewish quarter (the Mellah) to other parts of the Medina (the old town), creating the “blue pearl of Morocco” known today.

- Place Outa el Hammam - Every town and city has its central square, and Chefchaouen is no exception. Plaza Outa El-Hammam exudes an atmosphere that blends Moroccan and Spanish influences, evident in the fantastic food, both street food and restaurants, available throughout. The name literally means “The flat ground where the Hammam is” because near the square, there is a Hammam, as well as the Great Mosque and the Kasbah. It could have been named Outa El-Kasbah or Outa El-Jamaa (mosque), but it wasn’t. Regardless, it’s a great central point of the town, perfect for relaxing and admiring the majestic mountains that overlook the city.

Within the garden is the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, known as the Kasbah Museum. It invites visitors to explore its unique collection of artifacts that narrate the story of the Chefchaouen region, featuring everything from pottery to musical instruments. Places to see in Chefchaouen - day trip to Chefchaouen: Top attractions in Chefchaouen
- Grand Mosque - Built in the 15th century, Chefchaouen’s Grand Mosque was constructed on the orders of the city founder’s son. It features an octagonal minaret, which is somewhat unusual compared to the many square minarets that typically tower over the nation’s numerous mosques. The shape was influenced by Andalusian styles brought to the country by Muslims from Spain. Constructed from stone, the shades of brown and beige contrast with the nearby blue and white buildings. Admiring the mosque is among the top activities in Chefchaouen.

- Ras El Maa Waterfall - Translating to “head of the water,” this is where fresh mountain water flows into the town, serving as a popular gathering spot for locals. Not only are they an alternative to the remote and grand waterfalls of the mountains, but these refreshing falls are also ideal for escaping the heat and gaining insight into everyday life. Locals gather here to wash their clothes and enjoy a friendly water cooler moment. The rushing water powers some mills (Rhas) along the water stream.

- Spanish Mosque - After a delightful Chaouni lunch, your tour guide will accompany you to the Spanish Mosque, or Bouzafaar Mosque, to enjoy the stunning view over Chefchaouen from an outdoor terrace. Located 650 meters from Ras El-Ma, the Spanish Mosque is perched on a hilltop. The evocative ruins overlook the city, providing a fantastic vantage point to admire the surroundings.
The white-washed mosque was built in the 1920s by the Spanish. It failed to attract local worshippers and was never used as a mosque. Consequently, it fell into disrepair, but restoration works were later carried out. As a non-working mosque, all visitors can take a peek inside. It is also called Boujaafar Mosque, named after the Spanish official responsible for its construction, who had an unusually large mustache.
