Amani Nature Reserve - Established in 1997, this reserve is located in the forested East Usambara Mountains, covering an area of 83.8 km2 (32 sq mi). It includes the Amani Botanical Garden, which spans 3 km2 (1.2 sq mi), and an additional 10.7 km2 (4.1 sq mi) of forest managed by local tea estates. Traditionally, nearby villagers have utilized the forest for timber, firewood, medicinal plants, and as a source for gathering plants, bush meat, honey, and fruit. It also serves as a source of live birds, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates for international trade.
Depart from Tanga City before breakfast to Saadani National Park, with a stop at Pangani for breakfast, then continue to Saadani.
Saadani National Park - Officially designated in 2005, this park includes a protected ecosystem that comprises the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River, and the Zaraninge Forest. In the late 1960s, Saadani Village, after which the park is named, and its sub-village Uvinje, sought assistance from the Tanzania Wildlife Division (WD) to curb the rampant wildlife poaching in the area. This collaboration led to the creation of the Saadani Game Reserve (SGR), with an agreement to honor the land rights of the coastal sub-villages of Saadani, including Uvinje and Porokanya, while also addressing wildlife conservation needs.
